Musk to head federal government audit under Trump

After playing with the idea for several weeks, the “Department of Government Efficiency” looks to be finally materializing.

“I will create a government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms,” Trump pledged while speaking to the Economic Club of New York on Thursday.

“And Elon — because he’s not very busy — has agreed to head that task force. It’d be interesting. If he has the time that’d be a good one to do it,” he added.

Trump’s Thursday announcement marked his first official statement suggesting Musk’s role in Trump’s future cabinet if he wins the presidency.

“I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises,” Musk posted on X on Thursday morning. “No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”

In July, Musk endorsed Trump for the second term after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

During his speech, Trump emphasized the need for government’s financial accountability, citing that “fraud and improper payments alone cost taxpayers an estimated hundreds of billions of dollars in 2022.” Additionally, he also pledged to “launch a historic campaign to liberate the economy from crippling regulation” and make the US “world’s capital for crypto and Bitcoin.”

“My first term, I pledged to cut two old regulations for every one new regulation and we did much better than that. Yet, over the past four years, Kamala has added six thousand three hundred dollars a year in regulatory costs onto the backs of the typical American family. To stop this onslaught at lower prices, I’m pledging today that in my second term, we will eliminate a minimum of ten old regulations for every one new regulation.”

The former president focused heavily on his proposed economic policies if he wins in November, promising to make “Trump tax cuts permanent” and move jobs back to America, incentivizing companies with expanded R&D tax credits, 100% bonus depreciation, expensing for new manufacturing investments, and a reduction of the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15% “solely for companies that make their product in America.”

“What we’re putting forward is the most pro-American manufacturing and jobs policy in modern history for any country. This plan will bring jobs and growth into our country at levels never seen before. Every business on Earth will flock to America — from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and all over the world. By contrast, Comrade Kamala Harris wants to sacrifice our wealth, kill the economy and drive jobs overseas to punish businesses more. Businesses will leave. They’ll leave America. It would result in the largest small business tax hike in history, massively raising taxes on twenty-five million small business people and raising small business tax rates to 43 percent and higher. In other words, 20 percent higher than communist China.”

Either by design or pure coincidence, the proposed “Department of Government Efficiency” would be abbreviated as “DOGE”, a long-running meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog that also inspired the name of a cryptocurrency supported by Musk.
